PRAHRAN MISSION SUCCESSFULLY WINS MENTAL HEALTH TENDER FOR INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PACKAGES
The Victorian Minister for Mental Health, the Hon. Mary Wooldridge MP, has now released the final results of the re-commissioning of community managed mental health providers across Victoria.
UnitingCare Prahran Mission is pleased to announce that we were successful in our bid to provide mental health support packages in the catchment areas of Bayside, Inner East and South Eastern Melbourne from 1st August 2014. The tender, part of the Victorian Department of Health’s recent recommissioning of the mental health sector, invited various mental health agencies to tender for the provision of new Individualised Support Packages to people living with a mental illness.
Prahran Mission’s new geographical footprint will go from Port Melbourne, down the bay to Mordialloc, out to the outer south east of Pakenham/Cockatoo area, across to the outer east area of Ringwood/Warrandyte and back into the areas of Box Hill, Kew and Prahran. Prahran Mission will be working in many areas of Melbourne where we have had a smaller presence previously and will be engaging with a range of new community partners to provide the strongest possible support for each person’s individual recovery work.
This means that from 1st August 2014, Prahran Mission mental health programs will be replaced with Individualised Support Packages. This means you will be allocated a key support worker and that person will assist you in your developing and working towards achieving your recovery goals.
Prahran Mission Individual Support Service supports people with a mental illness and associated disability to live independently, maintain the best possible social and emotional wellbeing, meet their personal recovery goals and live satisfying lives in the community through the planning and delivery of packages of individualised client support. The benefit of this new service approach means that clients won’t have to re-tell their whole story to a range of different service providers, will have a recovery plan that reflects their priorities and goals and will have in place a range of strategies and support that help them manage their mental health.
In addition, the Open House Drop In Centre and Mingles Program will merge with and be located at the St Kilda Drop In Centre and transition into an Engagement Hub. Voices Vic will continue to provide peer support and be located at 211 Chapel Street Prahran.
The following Prahran Mission programs are not affected by these changes : Community Aged Care, JobSupply Personnel (JSP), Diversity & Advocacy, The Haven, Scottsdale Residential, Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMs), The Mission Caters, Hartley’s Community Dining Room, The Mission Stores, Emergency Relief, Education & Training, Faith Community.
The Prahran Mission approach starts with each person’s own strengths, values and goals. At Prahran Mission we believe everyone can live a decent, fulfilling and meaningful life through connecting with the things they care about, the people around them and their local community.
If you are a client with a different agency and are interested in using Prahran Mission’s services, it is advisable that you speak with your current worker and let them know you would like to transfer to Prahran Mission. During the month of July you can contact Prahran Mission on 9692 9500 and indicate which catchment area (Bayside, Inner East or South East) you would like to join. Once you leave your contact details, a staff member from the catchment area will ring you back and discuss your requirements.

Hearing voices is a common human experience.
Prahran Mission's innovative consumer-led program supports people who hear voices, their support and clinical workers, and families, friends and carers.
In 2012 Voices Vic won a Gold Achievement Award at The Mental Health Services (TheMHS) Conference, and the impact of our work continues to offer hope and recovery to people across Victoria.
Do you hear voices?
You are not alone.
We help set-up peer support groups for voice hearers, deliver talks and information sessions about the voice hearing experience, and run training about recovery from voices. We also run individual peer support in our Voice Exchange program.
Our work is open to voice hearers, mental health professionals, and family, friends and carers of voice hearers.
We work with the hearing voices approach, which is informed by the wisdom of people who have recovered. We don’t try to get rid of voices, but instead work to help people make sense of them and eventually change the relationship with the voices.
